Why You Are Respected

Why You Are Respected

Òwe Yorùbá (Yorùbá Proverb)

Ewe lo mbẹ lara isu ti a fi mbẹru kan-hin kan-hin

Translation

It is because the tendrils of a planted yam are still fresh and growing that the tendrils have not been used as sponge

Yam Tendrils and leaves

Application In the Yorùbá land in the ancient times it is the dry tendrils of old and harvested yams that would be squeezed together to make sponge. But when the tendrils are still fresh, because the yams are still at the growing stage, the tendrils would not be touched because if they are touched it would affect the growth and development of the yams in the ridges.

People now use this proverb to warn some people that they are not the ones they are afraid of, neither respected, but that they have been refrained from carrying out what they wanted to carry out on the person because of the person that they know are close with them.

Yams

It is also same today, some people are at the moment enjoying some benefits that they do not deserve, not because people are afraid of them but because of some people who are close to those people, those ones close to them are those whom those people are looking unto that make them refrain in carrying out what they wanted to carry out on them.

You may also be among those people who are enjoying some benefits or protections now because of the person whom you are close to, some respected people in the society and those people are those that are being look upward to which stops them (people) from blasting you.
